CALIFORNIA MEMORIAL CEMETERY SITE DESIGNThis challenging design project involved displaying historic 1770 -1880’s memorial gravestones that were discarded into the adjacent wooded area back in the 1970’s. The design concept was restricted to placing the display within the given 10 feet alleyways of the cemetery site. The resolution to the design was to provide two concrete walls that align the alleyways that hold the stones in a collage image mounted to the walls. The walls were asymmetrically aligned and mounded with earth to give a sympathetic and un-imposing presence to the memorial with respect to the peaceful park-like setting. Visitors can sit in contemplation within the enclosure of the stone-collaged walls that allows for quiet reflectance. |
